RECENT NEWS
Thanks to all the parents who came to our “Gross Grub” meal
and contributed to the funds for the Lewis and Clark trip in
the fall of 2010.
This last week we have been working on getting our portfolios
together, personal statements, and final reflections on A
New World.
We are planning to start our next expedition the week of 2/8.
In this expedition, we will examine the American Revolution from
many different perspectives. Look for further details as the
expedition progresses. Spelling will also begin next week.
Students still need to be reading, working on book reviews and
math homework. Because of the amount material that needs to be
covered in math, homework is an integral part of the curriculum.
The homework assigned is designed to provide practice for the
past concepts students have learned keeping those concepts sharp.
Please encourage your student to complete their homework in order
to be prepared for the next day's lesson.
This year 4/5 crews will once again be the guinea pigs for the
BSU “Phy. Ed. Methods” class. Your student will be
bused to the college to participate in physical education activities
planned by college students. The 4/5 students will need to be
prepared by having tennis shoes and appropriate
clothing to tear around the gyms for an hour. They are kept very
busy and work-up a sweat! The dates they will go are Thursday,
Feb 18th, March 18th and 25th, April 1st and 8th.
On Feb 19th the 4/5 crews will have a day of activities to kickoff
the next expedition on the Revolutionary War, Becoming a Nation.
To help us with the activities we plan on involving the students
in we need some materials that you may have or are willing to
get and send to school for student use.
Here is the list of materials: Whole cloves,
not powder (the ones that have been in your spice cabinet for
ever would be great!); portable hot plates,
preferably ones that have two burners, at least 2 hotplates would
be ideal, to use for the day. Each student will also need an
orange on Feb 19. We will remind students to bring one
in prior to that Friday. Does anyone have one of the electric
bulbs that when touched on the outside there is lightening on
the inside that we can borrow for the day?
Don't forget book review # 8 is due Feb 17. Thanks for your help!
Thanks,
Hilary and Judy

My name is Hilary Phukan and I teach 4th and 5th grade at Schoolcraft
Learning Community. I have been teaching at Schoolcraft since
the first day it opened. It has been an amazing experience to
be part of the growth of a school. I love working with all the
students here and feel very fortunate to be able to share my
days with them.
I was born and raised in England and it was there I had my first
teaching position. I then came to the United States to work on
a masters program at Illinois State. It was there I met my husband,
we got married, and moved to Bemidji. While my children were
young I stayed at home with them and then returned to teaching
when my youngest was in 3rd grade.
When I am not in school, my family and I enjoy travelling. We
usually spend part of our summer in France and visit England
at least once a year. I have been very fortunate to be able to
spend some very memorable vacations in many parts of the world
with my husband and two daughters. We also enjoy gardening and
cooking. We try to duplicate some of the wonderful foods we have
tasted around the world.
